NGO "Save The Future Generation" and orphans protection

Emotionally, the main problem is a lack of love and family warmth. The children don't go on enough excursions - walks in nature, trips to other cities, or cultural trips. Children often complain about boredom. A lot of children can't go for bike rides because the luxury of a bicycle is unavailable in orphanages. I know, in the world economic crisis, that we have some problems. If we find possibility to help orphans, the God will help us.

Boarding school – SENAKI Orphanage

The building is designed to be an orphanage and is accommodating children between 6- 18 years old with mental or physical disabilities. There are 49 children in total as one boy 21 years old just died the day before, death caused by a genetic severe disease. Three other children are in very bad health condition and they should be hospitalized almost all the time, fact which makes it difficult to manage. One seven years old girl for example is not able to eat and she is being fed with child’s bottle and others are suffering from Down syndrome.  Even if they do not have ambulatory in the building, there are always doctors present to asses and supervise their health status and there is a hospital for children nearby close to the orphanage.

The State Care Agency is providing them with food, clothes and also is paying the personnel wages. This Agency has taking over the management of this orphanage after January 2010 and things have improved a lot. Before they had to run and fights for everything, now with a simple official letter stating their needs, the Agency is proving the items required. The medical staff is composed by pediatrician, four nurses, neurologist, psychiatrist and psychologist. There are also 21 teachers and four senior ones who are in charge for individual approach and planning of study, which is being revised every six month for each child. Two other teachers are responsible for music classes and handcraft. Nevertheless, there are two cooks and two assistant cooks, three cleaning ladies, and five technical personnel in charge with taking care of the yard and the shed. In total there are 54 employees. The working hours are officially from 09- 18 hrs but due to the sensitivity of the activities they are practically 24h on duty. According to the director, no salary can compensate the type of job. For example, teachers receive 240 GEL/month. All the staff working with these children has received specialized training on standards how to take care of them, how to approach them and also psychological aspects. The training has been provided by the NGO First Step for Georgia.

Out of 49 children, 15 are attending school in different places in SENAKI. They are disseminated among several schools in order to integrate them and to sensitize the others regarding these children’s problems. Before going to public school, teachers and the respective parents of normal children have been trained by the NGO DEA Association on how to behave and to approach in order to make it easy the communication and their integration. At the end of every academic year, there is an event organized by the mixed children. Other social activities are being carried out such as taking them to the Theatre, or to the music hall together with other children for dancing and signing. Sometimes, visitors from other schools are coming, as well as from the ZUGDIDI University.

An important contribution has been done by UNICEF who contributed by donors for the rehabilitation of the building for children, also arranging a sport hall, and a place in the yard for children to play outside. The director confesses that they can really feel the support, especially from NGO in ZUGDIDI like DEA Association, ATINATI, the Justice Office, and the Prosecutor Office and others.

Last year there have been 96 children but some of them moved to special house in TERJOLA, those having mental problems or in MARTKOPI, those being physically disabled. The director is also taking care o the documentation problems, as most of them arrived at the orphanage without any birth certificate or other personnel document. This is also because they can be registered in other centers after reaching the age of 18 if they do not posses any identity document.

After reaching the age of 18 years old, the youngster is being assessed by a special Commission to check his health. If the Commission assesses that the person has no medical problem, then he should leave the settlement but usually the State is not able to provide them with a shelter of job, and they are still leaving in the orphanage. For the moment, three are completely healthy but remained at the Boarding School. HHT asked if these persons could get an unofficial job in the settlement, but the director stated that these youngsters prefer to have the status of beneficiary because they refuse to work without being paid.

The only thing missing is a proper kitchen for all of them. Beside the equipment provided by UNICEF, they need to rehabilitate the place for kitchen and to arrange a proper dining room. However, they have hot/cold water inside, central gas heating, separate room for laundry and all the needed utilities for a normal and comfortable life.
